It's been almost a year since Basil joined our family. We had lost our long time family member, Tzeitel, a 14 year old terrier mix (also a rescue dog), just the week before, and with my husband deploying with the Navy at the end of the month, we knew the kids (who had never known life without a dog) would have an even more difficult time. We immediately started perusing the web for adoption options. While there was no picture posted yet of Basil, his description intrigued us. When we contacted SPOT, we were told there would be an adoption fair in Mount Vernon that weekend. Basil was impossible to resist, despite his mange patch back by his tail. He was 35-40 lbs. of hound, with big fat paws and a totally endearing personality. We took him home and quickly learned there was more to this 5-ish year old dog; he was already well-trained, too! For the first few months, as we tried to teach him several commands, we would find that he already knew most of what we thought we would te
ach him. Roll over, wait, heel, sit, shake, down . . . and the kids taught him quiet and speak. Our vet decided that he is not really a dachshund after all; more likely a basset-coon hound mix. He is all nose and all heart - playful but gentle, and silly. One family member has described him as Looney Toons character - a perfect description! We feel so lucky to have added him to our family. Thanks for the wonderful care you provided him with, S.P.O.T., while he waited for his forever home with us!
